In the era of big data, cross-computing of massive data is believed to provide better support for scientific research, medical care and finance. Many institutions or organizations, on account of information security or interests, are not willing to release their internal data to the outside world, which led to the fact that data islands are formed, and the value of data cannot be realized. It also posed challenges to the expansion of application scenarios for identity verification. Secure Multi-party Computation (SMPC) could be a perfect solution to this, while ensuring the data security of all parties, and obtaining the expected calculation results. In order to optimize the data value safely, break down the barriers to the flow of data between industries and enterprises, and better serve Blockchain-based Dynamic Multi-dimensional Identification (BDMI) technology, THEKEY project team, along with the world’s top data security computing company Huakong Tsingjiao Information Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (Huakong Tsingjiao, https://www.tsingj.com), reached an agreement entitled “Research on Secure Verification of Social Security Data in Commercial Insurance” at the end of 2019.
Huakong Tsingjiao is co-sponsored by Tsinghua University, Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences, Tsinghua University, and PBC School of Finance, focusing on research, development, and operation of cryptographic-based SMPC technologies. Prof. Yao Qizhi, winner of the Turing Award, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and dean of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information of Tsinghua University, served as a chief scientist at the corporation.
The cooperation will provide data security solutions for THEKEY to enhance the socialized application of personal social security and health data from various government authorities such as Bureaus of Human Resources and Social Security and Bureaus of Medical Insurance, thus to accelerate the implementation of big data security applications in commercial insurance, finance, credit inquiry, Internet and other industries.
THEKEY project team provides its blockchain platform, THEKEY’s Medical Insurance-Medical Treatment-Medicine Platform, and an open capability platform environment during the collaboration, and is also in charge of the business process planning for a variety of application scenarios. Huakong Tsingjiao is responsible for integrating key technologies such as personal authorization, secure multi-party computation, and personal privacy protection in the data capability open platform. The two parties take the insurance industry as the main entry point to jointly operate the research of social security data applications. They will further the cooperation in blockchain, multi-party secure computation, and personal data privacy protection to promote the use of government data in actual application scenarios.
The technical solution integrated data exchange platforms and capability open platforms of various government authorities that are deployed on the selected nodes of THEKEY blockchain platform. The SMPC module is deployed on the capability open platform of different nodes, which will be combined with real business and store data locally on the basis of not exposing data privacy of multiple parties while optimize the data value through collaborative computing, bringing enormous benefit to a variety of applications. The platform perfectly reflected the data security application principles of THEKEY — “the data never leave the custody of the government, the data can never be downloaded, and the data can never be seen by unauthorized person” and “burn after reading”.
Here we take the underwriting business with insurance companies as an example to introduce you how it works:
The insurance company submits the underwriting algorithm (excluding the parameters) to the Human Resources and Social Security Bureau for its approval to enter the underwriting engine.
The insurance company submits underwriting request which contains the identity information of the person to be underwritten.
THEKEY’s Medical Insurance-Medical Treatment-Medicine Platform queries to obtain various data of the underwriters, completes the data pre-processing through Medical Term Standardization (MTS) Engine, and encrypts the data through data access nodes and then reach the underwriting engine.

The underwriting engine of SMPC completes the computation according to the encrypted underwriter information, underwriting parameters and underwriting algorithm, and then obtains the encrypted underwriting result. The underwriting results will be recorded in plaintext in Human Resources and Social Security Bureau for further review and certification.

SMPC allows different institutions or individuals to perform computation to protect privacy without the intervention of trusted third parties, which is in line with multiple features of blockchain, such as the mutual distrust network, the decentralization, and the goal of solving trust issues. The combination of SMPC technology and blockchain technology will help THEKEY to establish a multi-party collaborative security identification mechanism that guarantees the integrity, reliability and credibility of identification data. The mechanism further realizes functions of identity authorization, identity authentication, and data sharing on the blockchain, which guarantees the authority and credibility of the information, reduces data redundancy to a certain extent, and improves the efficiency of identity authentication.
